Disc Golf World Championships Set The Stage

Ann Arbor, MI -- Over 800 disc golfers from around the globe were gathering in Ann Arbor today for the Discraft PDGA Disc Golf World Championships, the largest event of it's kind. Their goal: fun, frisbees and a total purse of more than $150,000.

"This is the first time we've combined professional and amateur World Championships into one event, and there's no better time than now to see exactly what disc golf is all about," said Tournament Director Steve Peck.

Disc golf is a sport that combines golf with frisbees. Players throw for par using specially-made golf discs, which can fly much farther than you might expect. Their target: a steel-and-chain basket contraption known as a "Pole Hole." Hit the chains, and drop into the basket.

"Disc golf is just as exciting and challenging as traditional golf, without the cost," said Mark Ellis of the Professional Disc Golf Association. "We play in parks, and only have to buy a couple of golf discs instead of a bag full of clubs. It's perfect outdoor fun for families."

The tournament's international field includes players from as far off as New Zealand, Sweden, and Japan. World distance-throwing record holder Scott Stokely will also be in attendance, and will perhaps break his incredible feat of tossing a golf disc more than 693 feet, a length equal to more than two football fields.

Disc golf activities and competition will be held each day through the week, culminating in the Finals competitions on Saturday, August 5. The public is invited to attend, there is no ticket fee. Park entrance fees may apply.
