Bits and Pieces
Hello...Is This Mic On?
Worlds is one of the few -- if only -- opportunities you have as a PDGA member to speak your mind directly to most of your elected officials. Despite this well known fact, all of the PDGA forums scheduled this week were cancelled due to poor turnout. The PDGA wants your input, and will continue to solicit your opinions. The PDGA can only interpret this lack of turnout as a sign of approval of the current organizational goals. We will continue to work toward the best interests of disc golf and your enjoyment of the game.

You Gotta Be Kidding:
Disc Golf World News Publisher and PDGA Board member Rick Rothstein sauntered up to Thursday night's Jumbo Toss to take a look around. He didn't have a disc, but someone shoved a putter into his hand and said, "Throw." Despite not having tossed a disc all week, Rothstein managed to sink one in on the first try, and pocketed $100 for his efforts. "Ha ha ha," he said. "I may be old, but not that old!"

Bits and Pieces, Cont.
Tragedy For The Champ:
Reigning World Champ Ron Russell suffered a tragic injury during Friday's round at Cass Benton. On hole #5, he smashed his throwing hand into a tree, injuring and possibly breaking the hand. After attempting to play with the injury, Russell could not continue to use the hand. In a gesture of pure guts and sportsmanship, Russell finished out the round throwing with his left hand, and still managed to card an incredible +8. We salute Ron Russell's character and bravery, and wish him a speedy recovery towards regaining his crown in 2001. It appears he will now be unable to challenge the current frontrunners, Ken Climo and Barry Schultz.

On The Mend:
Cass Benton also took a bite out of Juliana Bower on Thursday, when she was pierced by a large thorn into her bicep. "I didn't even feel it at first," said Bower. "Then I saw it sticking out of my arm and tried to pull it out, but it just pulled my skin up, and wouldn't come out." The three inch offending flora was eventually dislodged, and Bower was back to form on Friday.

Sommer Breeze:
Mike Sommerfeld in the Advanced division caught Curtis Gatlin in the 5th round and increased his lead to two strokes before competition began on Friday. But there would be no catching Sommerfeld! He added to his lead, shooting a eight under par on the Hudson Mills Original course to give him a comfortable six stroke spread heading into the semifinals.
