Tournament Central Humor from Mark Ellis Disc Golf As A Water Sport? By
Mark Ellis / Brian Sullivan
The Wednesday weather was no surprise only because we had access to some high-tech forecasts from our webmaster buddies. When it hit, it was completely cool. The blast began with thick air and overcast skies. The first drops were huge and heavy with water. A little rain gave way to a downpour like the heavens were overflowing.
Hudson Mills: delayed for one hour due to lightning. It was really cool and completely overwhelming. The kind of rain that penetrates your high-speed windshield wipers and renders them useless. You couldn't see your golfing partners 30 feet away. You must understand that traditionally, Michigan weather in the first two weeks of August is hot and humid, but no rain. How do you prepare for flash floods during the Michigan August? We didn't even have any umbrellas in the Worlds merch store to offer the players. The Cass-Benton course has two baskets that sit close to water. Hole four was not under water this morning... only because the park pumped it out. Thanks guys. Hole 12 is named "Swamp Monster." Two weeks prior, a tiny tickle of water flowed through, and lots of mud. Top pros couldn't have thrown OB on purpose. Today that trickle was a river. The rain was so heavy that casual water flooded this hole. One poor Junior threw his favorite putter -- a fine, straight shot -- that landed 15 feet from the basket, where the terrain is usually flat and dry. The putter landed in six inches of water and was never seen again. The fast flowing current sucked it into oblivion and disc golf history. Twenty-five minutes after the worst of the weather, it was sunny and lovely. Tuesday brought us four separate showers during the day. Wednesday brought their granddaddy. If you'll excuse me, I must take shelter now, as another front of boomers are closing in....
