Tournament Central Ace Report By
Terry Calhoun
Q: How many Aces were there at Worlds 2000? A: Thirty-nine. Twenty-five by Pro players and 14 by Am players, including 3 by Am Juniors and 3 by Am Grand Masters. Q: What's the biggest Ace story? A: Am Grand Master Rock Searle hitting two in a row Friday afternoon on the Monster Course (from the short tee pads). Rock hit Hole 5 and then, with his very next throw, hit Hole 6. Congratulations, Rock! Q: What's the second-biggest Ace Story? A: There was more than one card with two Aces in a single round. But, with the exception of Rock's back-to-back Worlds Aces, the most interesting was when Pros James and Jackie Smith, who are brothers, hit Aces when on the same card together on the Monster Course. They hit Hole 6 (James) and Hole C (Jackie). Once the Pro and Am Ace Pools were split up, each Pro earned $30 cash for their Ace, while the Ams earned $50 in "funny money" - which had to be spent at the merchandise table onsite. Q: Which were the Ace holes? A: No surprise to locals, the Kensington Tunnel Course's Hole #3 was hit 5 times. Holes 14 and 15 on the Tunnel Course were each hit once. Next was the Hudson Mills Monster Course's Hole #2. It was hit three times from the long tee and once from the short. Monster Course Hole #6 was hit three times, once from the short tee and twice from the long. Holes 3 & C were also hit, from the long tee, and Holes 5 and 15 were hit from the short tee. There were 11 Aces on the Campground Course. Am Grand Master Cal Benke hit his first Ace ever on Hole 20. Hole 20 was Aced twice. Hole 6 was Aced three times and there were single Aces on Holes 1, 3, 13, 14, & 22. There were surprisingly few Aces on the Hudson Mills Original Course. A total of only 5. Hole 12 was hit twice and there were single Aces on Holes 10, 13, & 16. Also surprisingly, there were more Aces on the Toboggan Course than at Cass-Benton (soon to be known as Benton Hills, by the way). Not many more, though. The Toboggan Course proved that there are potential birdie holes (6, maybe) by allowing four Aces: two on Hole 17 and one each on Holes 3 & 7. Cass-Benton allowed only two Aces: one ach on Holes 10 & 15. Congratulations to all those who hit Worlds 2000 Aces!
