Bower WatchTough Competition By
Denny Ritner / DiscLife.com
Tuesday Update Day two of singles play showcased some very fine head to head action between Juliana and Elaine. The morning round was played on the Campground course where Juliana shot –8 to Elaine’s –6 to increase her lead to four strokes. These fine rounds came in spite of a 50 minute lightning delay. In fact, the players came back firing immediately after play resumed by canning birdie putts for a star frame on #22. Juliana made beautiful deuces on #9 (325), #12 (35), and #5 (335, tunnel turnover shot) on way to her bogey-free round. Elaine countered with exciting ace runs on #4 and #6. She also made several tough putts and displayed a super-solid upshot game. First round playing partner, Lesli Herndon from Alabama, showed that she’s got what it takes to contend for the crown in the near future. A focused competitor, Lesli canned five tough putts during the round and had a couple bounce off chains just a little high. Her 74 dropped her off the lead card, but she will definitely be back up there again in future tournaments. Round two featured Juliana, Elaine and Deb Renner from Florida on the Original Course. They treated the gallery to some very solid golf. This time Juliana and Elaine fought to a draw at even par and Deb took top honors with a –1. Each player had minor setbacks and managed to fight back strong. Deb’s putting was terrific down the stretch as she pulled ahead for the round. Thursday’s play is at the challenging Cass-Benton Course in Northville. Anni Kreml will join yesterday’s lead group as the format switches to foursomes for the 18 hole courses. Expect tough competition as they battle tight tunnel shots and difficult shot selection choices.
