How did I get into disc golf?

That's the big question, isn't it? Let's go back about twenty years.... I was 11, and my best friend was Tommy Rogers. We played almost every day--or so it now seems as I look back. We'd throw our Wham-O 141's and 165's in the street, often skipping supper and staying out past dark. That's when I fell in love with the frisbee. Then my family moved to Ohio. Unfortunately, there weren't many frisbee players at my high school. There was, however, the occasional ultimate game during lunch, and that was enough to sustain my addiction.

Then to college. The small campus at Ohio Northern U became my new home. After hearing about the UPA, I set out to become the Founder of ONU Ultimate Frisbee. Meanwhile, I became obsessed with frisbee golf. We created a couple of obstacle courses on campus and played religiously, sometimes at 2 am, or even in a blizzard. Ultrastars were the disc of choice. We didn't even know what golf discs were.

During the summer of '93, I worked near Greenville, South Carolina. A guy at the summer ulty league told me about the course at ECU. That was the first basket course I played. My first discs were an Eclipse, a Stingray, and an XD. But I didn't really get into disc golf until I graduated in '95.

After college, I moved to southeastern Ohio and soon found myself driving back and forth to ONU just to play frisbee. Looking for something new (and closer), I showed up at Sunday Doubles at Big Run (Columbus, OH). Met my first "Pro" there--Chuck Custer--and he gave me a mini. From that point on, I've stereotyped disc golfers as being the nicest bunch of people you could hope to meet. So I jumped on the Tour! My first tournaments included the 1997 Pittsburgh Open and the InFlight Open. I was hooked and joined the PDGA. I didn't stay in Region 6 long, as a job took me to Oregon for almost two years. My favorite course of all, even though it has no baskets yet, is Whistler's Bend (Roseburg, OR). Eventually, I decided to change jobs again, and moved back to Ohio. And now, here I am, going to Worlds for the first time.

Good luck, everybody!
