Todd Branch’s 1999 Course Picks

After playing a total of 121 courses throughout the season, DiscLife’s Todd Branch shares his list of courses that offered a unique or exceptional disc golf experience in 1999.

To get onto this list, a course needed score highly against Todd’s Criteria of General Attributes for a Cool Course (CGACC):

  • Good mix of shots
  • Elevation changes
  • Water and/or other challenging hazards
  • Good tee pads
  • Quality targets
  • Well maintained
  • Holes that don’t cross/crowd each other
  • At least one beautiful signature hole
Jefferson Barracks - St. Louis, MO
Not ridiculously long. Good elevation changes, nice grassy park. Well laid out.

McNaughton Park - Peoria, IL
The signature hole is 18: 900 feet, plays off a huge hill. OB left, thick woods on the right. Beautiful - it has everything.

Winthrop College - Rock Hill, SC
Gorgeous. Good mix, the US Championships setup was tough. Al and I were two of the four people who were able to shoot under par there (along with Ken Climo and Barry Schultz).

Hudson Mills, Original (Blue) Course - Ann Arbor, MI
Sculpted fairways. Cement pads, both longs and shorts. Well maintained, drinking water, bathrooms and concessions. The park is committed to the future of the course (mature tree replacement!). Reasonably challenging for any skill level.

La Mirada - La Mirada, CA
Great course for the room they had to work with, although there’s lot of civilians wandering around. Very beautiful, with water fountains, cut grass, a brilliant contrast to the hustle and bustle of the California cityscape.

Cliff Stevens - Clearwater, FL
Lots of large bodies of water, big trees and big tree roots everywhere. On the signature hole, you can pick how daring you want to be: go 400 feet across the water, or play it safe to the side. Ken Climo has it good.

Ellison Park - Rochester, NY
My favorite ‘99 Worlds course. Good elevation changes, and lots of shots you don’t see on other courses.

Kaposia Park - St. Paul, MN
Great pro payout at the MN Majestic! Some huge cliff shots, the course worked me hard. You’ll play a short, open hole and follow it with some mountain climbing. Lots of holes where you can’t get twos.

Brent Hambrick Memorial DGC - Columbus, OH
Every hole is a unique experience. Tough woods, some crushing shots, couple of big downhills. Tough deuces, easy bogies.

Toronto Island - Toronto, ON
The course is on an island! Very peaceful. At night, we could see the city lights about a mile away over Lake Ontario. You take a ferry over to it, lots of friendly people... an experience just to go there.
