While Todd admits they ate at restaurants an average of once per day, there were a lot of meals prepared at camp. "Al is a campfire freak. He always has to have a fire.” As a result, a lot of campfire-friendly food was prepared, like hamburgers and hotdogs. The Winnie was fully equipped with a stove, microwave and refrigerator, so other typical dishes included spaghetti, sandwiches, baked potatoes and eggs.
"Overall, we were very comfortable. We never got sore backs from the beds, and there’d usually be a nice breeze blowing through at night.” They kept a television, but viewing was generally limited to VCR movies and video games, since the rabbit ear antennae offered poor reception.
"We need more space, so the stove is coming out. Dave Feldberg and I are building a storage bench there, and we’ll do our indoor flame cooking on a Coleman stove.” Also being removed are the Winnie’s toilet, sink, propane heater, and the water tank, all to make room for more storage. "Bathrooms are easy to find on the road, and we can use jugged water. We’re also adding a gas generator for times when we’re parked and the weather’s hot, but there are no electricity hook-ups. That way we can keep the animals cool during tournaments, and we won’t have to borrow electricity from our friends.”
Although the ‘99 season just recently ended, the pair are fired up for 2000. "We can’t wait. We’ll have a lot of advantages going into it as seasoned road warriors,” Todd said. "Knowing where the courses are and who the local go-to guys are will save a lot of time, and we shouldn’t ever be stuck starting a tournament without having played the course at least once -- we’ve already played most all of the big tournament courses.”
Other lessons have been learned, and adjustments will be made for 2000. "We’re going to cut down on the travel between tournaments, it’s just too tiring and expensive to go that far. It’s economically unrealistic. This year we’ll miss a couple of the bigger tournaments in exchange for better logistics.”
Here’s the real bombshell for the 2000 Tour: In addition to Todd and Al, the group will also include Women’s Rookie of the Year Sue Stephens and Amateur Points Champ Dave "Aquaboy” Feldberg on a full-time basis. That’s a total of four golfers, two large dogs and one cat living inside the Winnie. "Like I’ve been saying, we need more space,” Todd says with a grin.
As always, Todd will have his laptop computer, and will keep us up to date on all the excitement. Good luck to the entire crew, we’re looking forward to it almost as much as you are.
