November 23 1999, Newport News, VA
We left Dave McCormack’s Thursday afternoon and headed for Louisville, KY to meet
up with Dave Greenwell and say hello on our way to Virginia. Stopped in
and swapped gossip for a bit, then headed on our way.
An all night drive brought us to the "Ace Run Ranch" around noon. Don Johnson has
created a course on his own property here in Suffolk. Eighteen of the tightest,
toughest little holes you'll ever see. Lots of woods. The "Cool Breeze Classic"
B-tier tournament was one day only, on Sunday.
We practiced the course once and Don let us camp
on the property. Saturday was more practice and a random draw
doubles. Al won that, I tied for 5th. When it came to the tournament on
Sunday Al won that too. I also tied for 5th again. I was only seven strokes off
the winning score of -9 for two rounds, but it added up to a 5th place
finish. Sue tied for 2nd in Open Women and we all got a little bit of cash.
BBQ was cooked on site for lunch. With only 15 Open players (there was a
basket given away to 1st place advanced, which kept the Open pool down), Al
only got 30 points for his win. We figure he needs about 50 more this year to win the
PDGA points title, which means we'll have to hit one extra tournament this year, most
likely the Henry Horton Chill in December.
We stayed one more night at Don’s house. Next weekend’s B-tier is only about
an hour away. Monday we got up late, drove to Newport News and stayed at
a campground about a mile from Fort Eustis, where I spent seven months in Army
training back in 1987. Sort of brings back a lot of memories of my younger
days.
Anyway we plan to practice the course today some. Plenty of time to kill
before the tournament. We'll be heading back to Michigan and our families in
six days. Hard to believe the tour is almost over, it seems like it just
began. We're really looking forward to next year and some big improvements.
