SoCal Is So-So For Todd and Al
October 25 1999, Huntington Beach, CA

The drive into Los Angeles was without incident. LA traffic is about as bad as you hear about on TV.

We pulled into town and drove to La Mirada disc golf course, hooking up with Bobby Dodge at dusk. Bob’s house is about thirteen miles from the course.

Thursday morning we drove to the course to check it out. Bob had to make trips to two different airports to pick up Canadian disc golfer and all-around good guy Paul Belyea and Ken Climo. They all met up with us later at the course.

Juliana Bower spent about 30 minutes playing with Helix as she usually does. She seems to have a soft place in her heart for kittens.

We played the original 27 holes at La Mirada, but for the tournament there would be 2 - 18 hole courses set up. The tournament courses weren’t ready until late Friday. Most of the holes played differently than what we practiced, which made things difficult.

Al and I shot so-so in the first round. I was -5, Al was -6, Kenny shot -13, and Geoff Lissaman shot -12. Sue had a strong first round and was only 2 strokes off of Juliana. Second round saw Al, Sue and me drop off the pace. I had horrible luck and shot a +2. Al was -3. Kenny somehow shot a -15... incredible. Third round stunk for me at a -2, Al shot a -8 to get back in the swing of things. Sue was struggling to hang onto 4th. During the last round I managed a -6 with two OB strokes thanks to some hungry trees. Al had a -5, and Sue shot enough to tie for 4th.

Al cashed, Sue cashed, I didn't. The payout was very flat and we didn't get much. It wasn't really a very good tournament for any of us. Hopefully we'll do better next weekend in Las Vegas.

Today is Monday. We are taking Paul Belyea with us up to Rancho Cucamonga to check out the Innova warehouse and grab some loot. We'll still have a few days to kill until the Las Vegas temporary course we will be playing gets set up so we might go visit Yosemite park for a day or two. I'll let ya know later.

-Todd
