October 8 1999, Rock Hill SC
We hung out for the night in Mobile at Buddy Pacatte's house. He's a heck of nice guy and
funny as hell. We played a couple courses in the area and golfed with the
Sherrod's. The doubles didn't really go over. Nobody wanted to play. We
ended up golfing in the local league and then continued toward Miami.
Cliff Stevens is Climo's home course in Clearwater where we stopped and shot a round.
We didn't have Kenny's phone number but he later chastised us for not calling...
turns out he's in the book. From there we headed down to Lake
Okeechobee in central Florida. We camped there for a night.
It was a 1200 mile drive from Houston to Miami. Lots of gas money so we got
low on cash again. Luckily the entry fee for this tournament was only $75
each for Al and I and $40 for Dave. We shot a round at Tradewinds park in
Ft. Lauderdale and met up with Paul Hitzelberger. He was a course TD for the
tournament and let us spend the night at his home. Paul and his roommate both
went to Michigan State and knew how to play Euchre, so we played cards,
shot a few rounds and enjoyed some pizza.
Hyzer and Helix found Miami to be a bit warm. So did us humans. It was at
least 80 degrees each night. We couldn't find any decent local camping in
Miami so we spent the nights in the host hotel parking lot. No air
conditioning -- one night it was so warm that I slept out in the grass for a
few hours.
The Open players played at a temporary course at Amelia Aerhardt
Park and a permanent course at Kendall Indian Hammocks. Both course were
riddled with trick shots and OB -- only ten holes out of the
72 we played didn't have OB. Dave and the Ams would be playing Aerhardt and
Tradewinds. Tradewinds was mostly underwater.
Al and I shot our morning round. I had 5 OB strokes and managed to add my
scorecard wrong for a 2 stroke penalty, finishing the round with a +6. Al shot -1. Climo was
-4, Ron was -4, Stokely -1.
Al spent the rest of the tournament slowly moving up until the last round
when he shot a -7 and crashed into third, taking John MaCree's spot. I moved up
into 8th with some mediocre play. At one point, Stokely managed to take a
quadruple circle 10 on one hole, and ended up in 12th place.
Dave started off with a smoking round. He shot -4 with a triple circle
eight. It was still enough to put him in first place. He continued on
through rain each day (the open pool never got rained on) and finally
finished in 2nd behind Clearwater’s Dax.
There was a final 6 safari holes for the top 12 Open and Top 4 Advanced
players, all long and tough. There was an odd skins game
involved and cash for the best scores. Al tied for best score at 21 (I shot
22) and got an extra $75. Dave shot a 22 also which was tops for the
Advanced players and got 25 extra discs and a $100 bill.
We split Sunday night for Orlando and dropped Dave off at the airport. He is
flying back home and then jetting out to California to spend some time with
his brother and shoot a tournament. We wish him luck. Dave will most likely
be joining us next year for the tour as an Open player.
Seven hundred miles to Rock Hill and The U.S. Open. Lots of driving.
We stopped and
played a course in Daytona. Currently we are practicing at the US Open
course and catching up with our golfing pals that we haven't seen in awhile.
We ran into Kenny last night and he said the Innova had some good news for
Al. I'll let you all know what's up when I find out. Wish us luck.
