We held our first Maceman doubles at Riverside Park in Grand Rapids, MI. About 44 people showed
up to play. Thanks go out to the women’s league in the Grand Rapids area for
getting the word out about the doubles. It was a big success.
My on-and-off sweetheart for the past 14 years showed up at Riverside to
watch the fun. We hadn't seen each other for almost a full year. Heidi is
still so lovely. She is aging much better than I am these past few years. I
love you Squeaker!!!!
We headed off to Bowling Green, KY later that night. Heidi and I went to
visit my parents and her mom in Kalamazoo. We waited at Oshtemo park until
3am for Al and Dave to pick me up. It seems that Sue's truck jumped a timing
gear leaving Riverside and everyone got backed up for a few hours. It worked
out fine. Heidi and I got to reminisce about old times and do a lot of
talking about the future. She may be traveling with us for a week or two
next year. I can hardly wait to introduce her to all my new friends all over
the country.
There were only six players that showed up for the Bowling Green doubles. We
held it anyway and spent the night at Rocky Russell’s house playing ping-pong
and trading discs. Dave and I got a couple nice San Marino Rocs in trade.
Next morning we headed for Nashville.
We got to Nashville and played Seven Oaks. Nice course that was half tight
woods and half open. The locals had made the course nicer by installing
comfortable benches and keeping the fairways nice and clean. We met up with
the new champ Ron Russell and local player Tuna (2na). We had dinner and
spent the night at Tuna's house.
The next day we went and played Two Rivers. Very open with large mature
trees and lots of hills and lovely green grass everywhere.
On Saturday we started the tournament. Tennessee States is an overall event,
meaning there isn't much emphasis on disc golf. Al and I decided to
play golf, MTA, accuracy, and distance. Dave played all these and DDC and
freestyle.
Day one, Seven Oaks:
- Andy Ritter -12
- Todd Branch -11
- Al Schack -10
- Bob Vanderboss -10
- Dr. Rick Voakes -10
- Ron Russell -9
Dave shot -4 which put him in the lead Am group, two strokes out of the lead.
Day 2, Two Rivers:
- Andy Ritter -15(-27)
- Todd Branch -16(-27)
- Al Schack -16(-26)
- Bob Vanderboss -12(-22)
- Dr. Rick -14(-24)
- Ron Russell -14(-24)
I was tied for 1st. There was a final nine holes for the top four Open players.
They were for skins, a tie breaker for Andy and I, and a prize for lowest score
on the nine holes. Lots happening in the final nine. Dr. Rick skipped the
final nine because he had to head back home... that left me, Al, Andy, and
Ron. Third hole into the final nine I hit a tree on an upshot and had a 35
footer pop out the back of the basket. Andy won the playoff for first.
Along the way Al, Andy, and Ron all picked up skins.
I caddied for Dave who played after we were finished. Dave shot an
impressive -14 and took first by two strokes. It was Dave's first SuperTour
victory. Dave also ended up winning the amateur overall title. He cashed in
MTA, and Distance. Todd cashed in accuracy with a score of 14 points (3rd).
All together we had a lot of fun.
Todd tied for 1st in Open golf,
Dave took 1st in Am golf and Am overalls,
Al took 3rd in open golf.
Unfortunately we didn't win much money. The purse gets spread out among all
the events. I got only $190 for 2nd. Dave got mostly music CDs, a golf
bag, and other odd prizes. Al got $180 in skins and about $100 for 3rd in
golf.
We had dinner and headed southwest. We slept at a rest stop just outside of
Memphis and drove to a small course in Little Rock. We shot that course and
headed to Hot Springs (just to see it). It seems that Hot Springs was the
boyhood home of Bill Clinton... a fact that many signs reminded us of along
the way. Hot springs is very touristy, lots of attractions and strip
clubs... figures. From there we drove to a small town and spent a few hours
at a laundromat. Next we drove about 50 more miles to a small campground
about 90 miles northeast of Texarkana. That's where I'm typing away at this
moment.
We hope to make it to Houston tonight. Next stop... Texas State Championships.
