Skins Are Plentiful At Rumbletown
September 7 1999, Madison, Wisconsin
Well, time for another update...
Winnebago status:
A-okay. Flat tire number three struck on my way home from MDGO #6 at Addison Oaks.
Dad and I changed the oil and got all the tires and the spare back to
inflated status.
Other happenings at Addison Oaks included Al winning over Ron Russell by four
strokes! Todd had the distinct privilege of not cashing. Al shot a
whopping -11 during the first round at Addison, which is either a tie or a new record.
Add two lost discs to Todd’s total.
After working on the Winnie, Mom and Dad left for an anniversary
vacation of kayaking in Northern Michigan. After they left I got a call from
the hotel manager where they would be staying. He told me that the hotel had
accidentally overbooked and they didn't have a room for my parents. I
explained that they were on their way and it was their anniversary. The
manager proved unhelpful. I don't understand how a hotel can overbook.
Don't they ever go out and count how many rooms they have? Isn't their
booking system computerized? I hope everything worked out okay.
We played some league doubles in Kalamazoo then went up to Grand Rapids and
played their singles league at Johnson park. After Johnson we headed to
Milwaukee for the Rumbletown Classic.
Dretzka park, home of 'The Real Ice Bowl.' Lovely park... very lovely... I'd
have to say it's the nicest park that I'd never heard of.
We practiced the
course for a whole day and slept in on Friday before we the tournament’s random
draw doubles. Al was second in the doubles and I was third. The tournament
was Saturday only... we thought it was a two-dayer...
First round:
- Schultz -10
- Schack -9
- Then a couple -4 and -3
- Branch -2
It's a tough course, don't get me wrong. The 4 people with the best single
round scores regardless of division would shoot in a 6 hole skins match for
$600.
Second round:
- Schultz -12
- Schack -10
- Branch -9
I shot a good second round and made it into the skins match. Barry, Al, and
I finished 1,2,3 for the tournament. The 4th person to slip into the skins
match was Bob Ryan with a -5.
Skins:
- Hole #1, 800+ feet, Al takes a skin with a 40 foot putt for a 3. $100
- Hole #2, push
- Hole #3, push
- Hole #4, 900+ feet, Todd hits a 70 foot putt for 3 to push Schultz' drop in
for 3.
- Hole #5, Todd and Al park a 400 foot uphill hole. Barry and Bob miss deuce
attempts. Al makes 30 footer. Todd misses 20 footer. $400
- Hole #6, Bob wins a skin. $100
More skin money for the Winnie! ----> $500
We hung around for the post tournament celebration in Milwaukee then drove
down to a new course in Joliet that was having a C-tier the next day. We
slept for about 3 hours then found the course. Neither Al nor I had seen the
course and the wind was blowing at about 30 mph for the whole day. We
didn't do too well. I managed to take 4th place (2 strokes out of first).
We packed up and headed for Madison and the Mad City Open. Next time.
