June 10 1999, outside Kansas City, KS/MO
Last up was the team tournament. It seems like an eternity since then.
Suffice it to say that we won the team tournament (Team InFlight/Michigan).
The next day those who stayed around played random draw doubles in the
morning. Somehow Harold Hampton and Steve Rico got paired together. Al and
I also got paired so we played as a foursome. There were about 10 other
teams as well. Al and I ended up winning with a -19 for 24 holes. Steve and
Harold were second at -18.
Next we drove back to Ann Arbor to see Eric Farber, hit the bank (more on
this later) and pay the rent. We went over to Jaybird’s house in Lansing and
picked up some more plastic to sell. From Jaybird’s we drove to Kalamazoo and
spent the night in my Mom and Dad’s backyard. I visited with Mom the next
morning and we had breakfast. After breakfast we headed over to David
Feldberg’s to pick him up. Dave will be traveling with us for the next 3-4
weeks.
Here's the info on David Feldberg:
Birthdate: 4-6-77
Throws: A bunch of Banshees, Rocs, KC Cheetahs, and Aviars.
Distance: Throws it a long ways
Build: 6'0", 185 lbs.
Dave will be playing Advanced Amateur, and possibly Open in Kansas City.
Okay, so we picked up Dave in Kalamazoo and headed to my other bank on Gull Road, where I keep my
checking account. I deposited some money and left the back...
only problem was the bank has an 8' 8" overhang to drive under. The Winnebago
is about 8' 11". I hit the overhang and did minor damage to the bank...
The Winnie was a different story. The
roof vents got knocked off and it immediately started raining. I pulled out
of the overhang, gave the bank manager my insurance information and headed
for the nearby Meijer gas station, which has a roof. We sat under the roof and Al
attempted to duct tape the vents back onto the camper (I have pictures).
While on the roof of the Winnie we noticed the 8' 8" clearance sign from the
bank was up there... now it's hanging from the rear bunk inside the Winnebago.
Al's duct tape job didn't last long. After it stopped raining I went up top
and used some caulk and more tape and got everything solid. Off we drove to
Peoria for the Disc Golf Journal Open. We arrived at the McNaughton course
and played it a bit. Shortly after we saw Ron Russell and he directed us to
"Old Man Wallis's house."
Most of the tournament players ended up staying at Wallis' house. His yard
was filled with tents and campers. We had set up two baskets and everyone
was playing putting games. The Cali-boys started up their generator and we
played more video soccer matches. Next to Old Man’s house was a small
steakhouse and bar that was a tournament sponsor. We visited there often for
free beers.
For the Peoria tournament, the weather was very hot and muggy. The courses
were difficult and the rough was prickers and wild forest. There were
several occasions where we would have to wait on the tee for 20 minutes while
other groups finished the hole.
Here are the Peoria tournament results for our group of players:
- Climo wins
- 2nd Russell
- 3rd Schultz
- 4th Botte
- 5th and 6th Harold and Stokely
- 9th Steve Rico
- 13th Al Schack
- 16th Roger Canselor
I was one stroke out of cash.
David Feldberg finished 7th in Advanced and got some cool prizes.
After Peoria we headed down to Dave McCormack’s again (in St. Louis). The Cali-boys were
already there, along with Kenny Climo, Ron Russell, Scott Riley, and some others. We took
the day off on Monday and went canoeing on the Gaskonade river. The river was
on the way over to Kansas City where we will be playing in the KC Wide Open this
coming weekend. The canoeing trip was sixteen golfers: Kenny, the Cali-boys,
McCormack, and a whole bunch of others (no pictures, sorry). The canoe trip
was 12 miles of slow moving river and took about 7 hours to complete. Big
fun. Dave and I shared a canoe and we got separated from everyone else.
Dave spent most of the time in the water, I spent most of the time in the
canoe. Dave got a bunch of water in his left ear and is still trying to get
it out two days later.
On the way from canoeing to Kansas City, the Cali-boy's camper started having
transmission problems. They had to stop every 100 miles and add transmission
fluid. We stopped over at Carl Kittell's house for a break. I decide I
needed to change my luck so let Steve Rico shave my head ala basic training.
Feels pretty good and with how hot it's been out I think it may help me keep
cool. It seems nicer to “be” bald than to be “going” bald. I'll send pictures
later. From Carl’s house we went over to Swope park and checked it out. Long
holes: uphill, downhill, lots of rollers, not many birdie opportunities.
From there we went over to "Hal Baby Kurz" house where everyone would be
staying. Hal’s house is big and nice... old style home with hard wood floors.
We spent the first night playing ping-pong and eating spaghetti... next
morning Harold worked on the Cali-Camper for a while, trying to replace the
transmission seals. Harold decided that it was too much work for him and they
took it to a mechanic .... we'll see how that goes.
Oh....On our way to Swope park I had a truck run me into the curb and I lost
the bead on one of the dualie tires. We pulled into a small downtown car
inspection garage and the 'mechanic' (loose term) spent about an hour trying
to find the tools needed to break the lugs on my tire. Eventually we got the
spare on and he told me it would be $8. I gave him $10 and thanked him
profusely.
More updates:
Todd loses two discs.
Al loses one more.... no more aces.
Score Al a groupie.... we won't get into that yet since it's sort of a secret.
One flat tire, and one crash into a bank.
Other small problems include squishy brakes on the Winnie. I filled the
master cylinder but it didn't seem to have any effect. The manual mentions a
second booster system for the brakes, but I have yet to locate it. We're
thinking of having a mechanic check the brakes out.
-Todd
Touring rookie Dave "Aquaboy" Feldberg gushes:
"The one thing that I can say about touring with Todd and Al is that you never
know what is lurking around the next corner. It is definetely improving my
mental game, because I play every day with six of the top twenty pros in the
world. Everybody that we stay with treats us like family. Todd and Al are
good people, with many of the same interests as myself. Todd thinks that Al
is Quiet, but he is always getting into things without bringing any attention
to himself. It's like being at fifth grade camp that never ends. I am
playing Open here in Kansas City so I hope some of there skills rub off on a
poor little rookie like me."
Hal Baby speaketh:
"Hal Baby here, the owner of this house for Wayward Frisbee Travelers. It's
Wednesday (6/9) and everyone has settled into their space and is very relaxed. The keg of
Boulevard is on ice in the basement and the ping pong is almost as important
as this weekend's Wide Open. The pecking order is established with the critters -
Hyzer, Ziggy and RJ,
not to mention the two cats. Did I also mention the Scrabble game is
heated. Well off to eat at the deli and then to the new Swope course that
is 7800 feet. More from the HB crib later... Hal Baby is out of here. See
ya."
Here's some words from Steve Rico... He's yoked:
"Our camper's dying.... we're gonna steal Todd and Al's from him while he's
doing more typing later. Also, now that I got Todd to shave his head we're
gonna talk him into a nipple ring so he can be yoked like me."
This is Rog now:
"I hope you can soon become as yoked as me. Ha, I almost had a baseball hit
me real hard, you might have seen it on Sportscenter. It was cool, 50 foot
tall Jah Chupa on Milwaukee County Stadium Jumbotron."
"Peoria was wicked:
bugs, snakes, vines, thorns, ivy, heat, sweat, lightning, wind... cool course
though. I took a six with a big scar to remember it by, Stevie (Rico) took a 5 with
a scar too. Later 14 out of 16 of us got lost on the river. Todd and Aquaboy
led the whole way. Aquaboy has clogged up ears now.
Time to go practice in KC!"
The Adventure continues...
