July 10 2001, Kalamazoo, MI
We made the drive to Toronto without incident. Our friend Joe Geibel wasn't
as lucky. He was selected for a random search at the border, after which he
was pulled over by a policeman while driving through Canada and searched
again. The next day he awoke to find that the rear window had been broken out
of his car, although nothing was stolen. Joe would go on to qualify for the U.S.
Open. He says it was worth it.
After taking the wrong ferry to the wrong side of Toronto Island we hiked about a
mile with our bags, clothes, blankets, pillows, and a four man tent to PDGA Administrator Brian
'Guru' Hoeniger's house on the Island. Brian allowed us to camp in his back
yard for a couple nights for the tournament. He and 'Lady Guru' were very
accommodating and even cooked us some dinner on both nights. Thank you.
The tournament went pretty well with just a bit of rain on Saturday and nice
weather on Sunday. This year we played all three rounds of the Toronto
Island Open from the long tees. After two rounds of play on Saturday Guru
was in the lead by one stroke over me and two strokes over Steve Brinster and
Shawn Sinclair. We played one more round on Sunday after a kickin' party
thrown by TD Paul Beleya on the Island Saturday night. On Sunday I shot a
-4, Guru shot -1, Steve shot around even and Scott Martin shot a -7 on the
second card to beat me by a stroke. Arggg! Ah well, it was Scott's first
SuperTour win of his career (can you believe that?). I finished 2nd, Guru
and Mike Sullivan tied for 3rd, Avery and Worm tied for 5th, Dave was 12th. Complete results here.
(Editor's note: Red hot Scott Martin would turn around and win his second SuperTour
the following weekend at the Discraft Great Lakes Open.)
Paul Beleya puts on a hell of a show here. As usual the payout was rich.
There were tons of cash CTP's during every round (totaling about $1,000).
There was a free putting contest that I won and pocketed $150. There was free
mini-golf that I believe also paid $150 and included three aces by three different
players. The player's package included a CD of music that Paul personally
made (Paul is a DJ), a Nike dry-fit shirt with the TiO logo on it, and a few
other items. This place is great... you've gotta go play here at least once.
Sunday night we headed back to Kalamazoo. We made it home just as the sun
was coming up and slept into the afternoon. I went and visited with my
parents for a day and we ran a doubles event at Cold Brook park on Tuesday.
There was a good turnout even though the event wasn't widely
publicized. Tomorrow we will head out to Ann Arbor for the Great Lakes Open.
We'll spend the afternoon at the new Mt. Brighton course and then head over
to Hudson Mills for Wednesday night league. I can't wait.... my home course
and my home club. I haven't played at The Mills in at least six months... I
wonder how it's changed.
