March 1 2001, Phoenix AZ
The drive to Clearwater, Florida was mostly uneventful. The repair work done
in St. Louis on the 12 volt system seems to have been fully effective. We
rolled into Climo's backyard and hung out for a couple days until the first
leg of the Triple Crown. First leg was Friday/Saturday at Melbourne Park on
the east side of the state. We drove out and stayed at the Melbourne
campground, which was full again this year so we got pushed into
the overflow camping. No electric hookups in overflow gave us a good opportunity to
test out the onboard generator, which has enough guts to run the A/C
but tends to speed up and slow down as the compressor kicks in and out.
We have dubbed it as 'pulse-air.'
The Melbourne leg was won by Ron Russell,
next were Kenny, Johnny McCray, me, Dave, and Avery. Not bad. We
collected about $300 total. Not great.
Next day was a little event at
Space Coast National, a ball golf course in Titusville, Fla. Reese of
Fly-18 has designed a disc golf course that plays along the ball course here.
It was super nice, well thought out and a good time. The course played at
12,071 feet and a par-70. The cost was $35/round and you got a golf cart to
ride around in. We played the course three times over the next two days and my
arm was about ready to fall off. Dave and Avery -- being the strong young lads
that they are -- chucked discs endlessly. Dave set the new course record
with a 63, beating Climo's 64 from the previous day.
After our expensive time at Space Coast, it was time for the Rockledge leg of
the triple crown. Kenny ran away with this one followed by Eric Tracy,
Johnny Mac, Dave and Avery, me, and Greg Hossfeld. Russell was only four strokes
out of second, but the competition was so tough that he didn't cash. We
collected another $300 and headed off to Orlando for the final leg.
Ron won again in Orlando but couldn't edge Kenny out for the overall title.
Dave and Avery played well and took a tie for third (Dave and Eric Tracey) and
fifth (Avery), I was eighth. All three of the Winnicrew made top six for the overall and
earned the right to play in the 'Shootout,' where we got 'shutout.'
We sold a couple advertising spots on the Winnie to G's Discgolf Promotions
(Joe Gagliardo) and Sky South. This combined with a bit of cash from the
Triple Crown got us the $700 it took for gas and food to get to Phoenix. We
suffered one flat tire on the 53 hour drive, which Avery and I got changed in
about 15 minutes. Finally made it to Dan Ginnley's house in Phoenix and I spent a
rainy Wednesday answering emails and taking care of some business I had been
neglecting over the past two weeks. Today I will look at the course and meet
with Innova to hash out some sponsorship problems. Tomorrow is the first
round of the Bob West Memorial and my 33rd birthday. Wish us luck.
