December 19th, St. Louis, MO
We rolled into Kalamazoo shortly after the Newport News Fall Colors.
The Winnie stumbled into town with an 'uppity' carburetor and a chilly
interior. The heat was working but it was still cold as heck. The
warmest spot in the Winnie was in the driver's seat, so I drove most of
the way. I'd rather be warm than well-rested.
We were just in time for Thanksgiving. Sue came and picked up Al, then
Dave's parents stopped by and took him home. I had Thanksgiving dinner
with my folks and went to sleep for about 20 hours. Next morning I got
up, drove over to Dave's house and we went to Ann Arbor for the Ace
Race. After that we drove to John Ferry's house in Detroit and spent
the night... got up the next morning and went golfing with John and Mark
Ellis.
Okay... next we were back home for a few days and trying to figure out
what to do with all the time we had on our hands since we would be off
tour for a couple months. We couldn't take it. Dave and I packed up
my Celica and drove back to Virginia to play at Pohick Bay. We stayed
over at Craig Gangloff's for a couple days, and he showed us 'The Woodshed'
at Paw Paw. Beautiful course on a grassy mountainside. The wooded
holes are a nightmare. Very tough stuff, only about six of 18 were in
the woods. Pohick was a fun little course. The longest hole was about
250 feet and the shorter ones were under 160 feet. Cris Hysell birdied
the last 10 of 11 holes to beat me by a few strokes in that one. The
dude can putt. Glenn Henry -- a wiley old-timer -- also beat me.
After the tournament at Pohick it started snowing again. We drove south
back to Don Johnson's (He's gotta be getting sick of us) house and waited
out the storm. Next morning I took Dave to Myrtle Beach to stay with a
friend for a few days. I took a short nap there then drove 22 hours to
Linda's house in St. Louis. Finally, a chance to relax. Linda took
the week off from work and we hung out together and relaxed.
A week later I drove back to Knoxville, Tennessee to pick up Dave at the
Greyhound bus station and we played the Henry Horton Chill out in
Nashville. Rain, rain, rain... miserable time. We stayed with Steve
Ivy, a new player in the Nashville area who TD'ed the second tournament
he'd ever played in during the previous week. He was a great host and
man.... Nashville DG'ers can really party! Another snow storm hit and
we had to spend an extra night in Tennessee.
Seven hours back to St. Louis, where I dropped Dave off at Dave McCormack's
house. We spent the next couple days making frisbees for Gateway and
earning a little Christmas cash.
Meanwhile back in Michigan it snowed like every day while we were gone.
The Winnie hasn't moved to it's usual winter spot in the backyard due to all
the flakes. My Dad pulled the carburetor to have a look at it, but I
haven't heard any word. Last I heard Al and Sue are still shopping for
a tourmobile of their own.
Dave and I will be heading back to Michigan tomorrow for the Christmas
holiday. I plan to come back to St. Louis after that to work for
Gateway some more. Trying to save up some funds to start next year's
tour with.
