July 21, Toronto Island, ON
After Mad City we stopped in at Kalamazoo play the local courses and catch up with friends, then took off toward Ann Arbor.
The Winnie got parked over at Bill Lauwer's and Nate Majeskey's house so we
could drive cars across the border. Storm stayed with Al's folks and Tommy Osborne took
care of Hyzer for a couple days for me. Thanks Tommy!!!!!
Dave had to go to his sister's wedding in Maryland.
We took two cars to Canada. Worm and I drove in my Celica and Al, Sue, Cam,
and Lesli took off in Sue's Blazer. We immediately got separated in Detroit rush
hour traffic. Worm and I pressed on and passed through the border
in Port Huron without any problems. We drove on to Toronto but got into town
too late to catch the last ferry over to Toronto Island where we would be staying
in Brian (Guru) Hoeniger's backyard for the weekend. Thanks Guru. The bad timing left us out on the docks, where we spent the night in the car before hopping the first morning ferry.
No big deal.
We still didn't see any sign of the others, and they weren't waiting for us at Guru's pad.
No calls either. Strange. Worm and I practiced the course and were left to wonder.
The next morning at the players meeting Paul Beleya informed us that
the others had been turned back at the border and would not be coming. Apparently
the border patrol thought they were coming into Canada to sell frisbees, and
confusion ensued. Frustrated, they headed home and missed the tourney.
I had a crumby first round on the shorts. I shot like a -3, while the leaders were around
-11 or something. It was sick. My next two rounds weren't all that bad and
I made it up into 7th or somewhere. I think I ended up beating Worm by a
stroke. My misery was compounded by an extreme toothache. I took everything
I could get my hands on to try and do something about it but it just kept on
throbbing. It was bad. Better now.
We got back to the U.S. and listened to Al's stories of border tragedy. It
was no big deal. The border people were mostly just being jerks. Congrats
to rookie pro Avery Jenkins on his first SuperTour win at the TiO. I'd say
this one puts him right on top for Rookie of the Year honors, much to Dave's
dismay.
Short and sweet. I got behind a little on my writing.
See you at the Brent Hambrick.
