June 27, South St. Paul MN
We were finally back home for the Inflight Open in Lansing, Michigan.
Hadn't been in the Great Lakes state since early February.
Al dropped Dave and I off in Kalamazoo and took the Winnie up
to Sue's sisters house near Grand Rapids, while Dave and I got our cars and took care of some
business at home. We played Cold Brook park a couple of times and visited
with some old friends, plus a stop at DiscLife.com HQ to see Brian and drop off some
photos. My mom was feeling better, but still has to head back to Texas for some more surgery.
The Inflight Open ran well as usual. The weekend before was one of the MDGO
legs at the same park. That weekend it was reported that the mosquitoes were
unbearable to the point that some golfers decided not to attend the Inflight.
They missed out. The bugs weren't really all that bad.
I shot lousy the first round, carding a +1 on the west course. The other
three rounds I played well enough to crawl back up to 14th place, but it was
a lot of work. Al started out up near the lead but when it was all done ended
up tied for 14th with me. Dave played fairly consistently but ended up one
stroke out of the cash. We are beginning to suspect that TD's are drawing
the cash line just above Dave’s name. ;)
We didn't win much cash but I did win a new basket with an ace in the CTP
(Closest To the Pin) contest. We sold that for $305.
Cameron Todd continued to tear it up, and won the Inflight Open. That is his
third Supertour win this year. I don't know if Kenny, Barry, or Ron have won
more than two so far this season. Ron was second.
As I hinted before, Elaine King shot some marvelous golf --
including a -10 in the final round -- and handed Juliana
Bower her first loss of the 2000 season. Juliana had been on a tear since she first
beat Elaine at the 1998 Inflight Open. Way to go Elaine! Sue didn't cash.
After Inflight, Dave and I drove back to Kalamazoo to say goodbye to family
and friends for another month. Al, Sue, and some other travelers drove on to
Ludington where Dave and I met them the next day at the Butterville
campground. It's a must if you ever find yourself in the area. From there I
took the Winnie and Jack Smith and rode the ferry across Lake Michigan to
Wisconsin, saving some money by not having to buy gas for the Winnie. The
others drove around the lake through the Upper Peninsula.
The ferry ride was exciting. There was so much wind that nobody would hang out topside. The waves
were rush and most of the passengers and half the crew got seasick....
including Jack and Hyzer. We got to the other side of the lake and I drove on
to Minneapolis to meet the others.
Matt Koerner was our host during the Minnesota Majestic. Many of us
touring nuts stayed in the backyard. Kaposia and North Valley were both
looking better than I've ever seen them. For the 3rd and final round (before
the final nine) I was on the second card with Al, Dave, and Barry
Schultz. Al shot a -6, I shot a -4, Dave shot a -1, and Barry
shot a -11. New course record. It was pretty incredible! Al finished 5th, I was
6th, Dave was 10th, and Barry was tied for second going into the final nine
for the top four pros. Barry would end up winning the tournament by two over
Cam Todd and Mike Randolph. Ron Russell was 3rd. This
was also a player ratings based event. It went better, but I remember 5th
and 6th place finishes in SuperTours paying better than the new system.
After the Majestic we traveled to St. Cloud to Cameron Ravenhort’s house and
visited some old mining quarries that had been turned into parks and pools.
We did some cliff diving and had a grand time.
Next up will be Spamtown on Saturday and Sinnisippi on Sunday, then over to the
Mad City Open in Milwaukee.
