May 15th, Cypress Gardens FL
Here I sit under a tent in Florida. How did I end up here
you ask? It wasn’t on our original schedule. The temperature has been over 90
degrees for us for the last 10 days, which has been getting on everyone’s nerves. It's
hot, hot, hot. The dogs aren't allowed anywhere -- another gripe about
Maryland -- the park didn't allow dogs, even if we kept them in the
Winnie. We got hassled by the park police when we were practicing the
course. So the dogs are miserable and we aren’t far behind.
We showed up at the Ace Run Ranch in Virginia earlier this month and camped there for the next 5 days. Don
Johnson has an old house on his private course and let us fire up our air
conditioner. The dogs were able to run free whenever they wanted to and
there were even a few ponds for them to romp in. They took full advantage,
and spent most of their time wet, muddy, and happy. We found a
glass repair business in Suffolk and got the windshield replaced for $180 bucks. We
paid Don back for the free camping by working on the course, mowing
fairways and trimming branches, digging some new pin positions and cutting down a
few trees. I did some chainsaw art and cut a Winnie “W” into a stump.
The Ace Run tournament panned out pretty well. Al won, I came in 3rd. Dave managed
to make some cash despite a few awful holes. We stayed another day and
cleaned up the course a bit.
We stopped over at Don’s garage and fixed a small brake problem and got a few
new spark plug wires. The radio in the Winnie mysteriously started working again.
A lack of funds forced us to decide not to drive all the way to
Wisconsin for the Fox Valley Open, which would have been followed by a long
drive to Waco Texas. Instead we took the much shorter drive down here to Cypress Gardens,
Florida. Gregg Hosfeld is putting on a B-tier right here on the lovely
grounds. Also included are frisbee dogs and freestyle.
Next time, results from Cypress Gardens and the long drive to Waco.
