April 3 2000, in the Blue Ridge Mountains, NC
Ten days ago we were getting ready to play the Dogwood Crosstown Classic in
Raleigh Durham, North Carolina. Our pals Mike Raley and Dave Biehl
flew into town from Michigan for the tournament.
We stayed at a small campground and Winnebago dealership for a night and checked
out some new and used Winnies. There were some nice models and some good
prices on used ones. We might be looking for a new Winnie next year (more
room) but for now ours is doing fine.
We met up with Dave Mansfield and Brian (MadDog) McCree at the Zebulon course
and they invited us to park at their house for the tournament. Dave and
Brian have about 250 discs hanging on the walls all over the house. Some
real nice ones too. The guys were awesome hosts. Dave even cooked a meal
for us one night and found some killer chinese food on another night.
Cameron Todd won the tournament, followed by Craig Gangloff, Larry Leonard,
me, and Brian Shweberger in 5th. Al tied for 10th, Dave tied for
14th. Sue was 3rd out of six women. There were about 70 Open players and a full
field.
The tournament went smoothly. We played two courses that were both pretty
tightly wooded but very nice. I’d recommend Zebulon if you are in town and only have time
to play one course. It just has the cooler holes, plus more grass than Cedar Hills.
After the tournament Sue, Al and I headed down to Rock Hill, SC to visit the
Innova warehouse and get some checks cashed (thanks Jonathan, Harold, and
everyone else at Innova!). Feldberg hopped an airplane for Clearwater to
spend the week with his sweetheart instead of traveling to the Wild Turkey Shoot
with the rest of us.
While in Rock Hill we stopped and played Winthrop University. Sue
played it for the first time. Not surprisingly, she really liked it.
We've been getting a lot of mail through the web site, which is great. I'm
trying to answer it all, but it's pretty time consuming and I haven't been
able to get to phone lines as much as I'd like to, so if you don't hear back from
us, we still enjoy and appreciate hearing from you. Right now the maid and
hotel staff here are giving us the big hint to get the heck outta the room.
We're driving back down to Rock Hill this morning.
Next time I'll tell about how I won the Wild Turkey Shoot in the Blue
Ridge Mountains. Nice course! Private land, 7,000 plus feet for 18 holes.
There is a 727 foot hole that you can reach from the tee and a 600 foot hole
that you can't get a 3 on (and it's wide open!).
Talk to you from Gainesville, Florida and the Gator Country Classic.
