PDGA Points System: How It Works
Information provided by the PDGA

Current PDGA members earm points by competing in a Professional or Advanced Amateur division at sanctioned PDGA Tour events. Players competing in an Intermediate Amateur, Novice Amateur, or Junior division do not receive points. PDGA points are accumulated through the calendar year, and are used to determine inviations to the following year's Professional and Amateur World Championships. Every year the PDGA awards Touring Player awards to the top points earners.

Types of PDGA Tour Events

A-tier (SuperTour)
Triple points awarded
These are the showcase events in disc golf, with the largest fields and payback of at least 100 percent of the pro purse. The minimum pro purse is $5000, and many SuperTours offer a pro purse of $10,000 and more. For Amateur-only events, a field of 144 or more players is required. Each entrant receives three points for entering, and three points for each person he or she beats in their division. About 30 SuperTours are scheduled for 2000.

B-tier
Double points awarded
Major regional events with 85%+ payback and a minimum pro purse of $1500+. Two points are awarded for entering and two points for every player beaten within that player's division. About 125 B-tier events are scheduled for 2000.

C-tier
Single points awarded
Modest sized local events providing 75%+ payback and a pro purse of at least $300. One point for entering and one point for every player beaten within that player's division. About 125 C-tier events will be held in 2000.

X-tier
Points awarded varies by tier
These are experimental class events with formats and payouts pre-approved by the PDGA Competition Director. Some common examples include: doubles, pro 1/pro 2, skins, overall, and events with Player Rating-based divisions. An X-tier can be sanctioned at the A, B, or C-tier level for the purposes of points allocations, depending on purse size and field (ex: an XB-tier). In doubles or team events, the unit is considered to be the team rather than the individual player, thus points are awarded for each team beaten. About 60 X-tier events are scheduled in 2000.

Major Events
No points awarded
These are championship level events based on invitations and player qualification. No points are awarded at these events, rather accumulated points and other criteria (returning champion, player ratings) are used to determine the field. 2000 PDGA Tour Majors include the Professional and Amateur World Championships, United States Championship, Women's National Championship, and the US Masters Championship.

All players must compete in the division they are registered in with the PDGA, or in a higher division. Players earn points at each event in the division they actually compete in. Points are tabulated by division, thus points are accumulated by one player in different divisions within the same year are not combined. No points are awarded if a player competes in a division below the one he/she is registered in, or when a player fails to complete an event.

SuperTour and Major events require current PDGA memebership in order to participate. For B and C-tier events, any player who is not a current PDGA member may participate by paying a $5 fee at each event entered, in lieu of membership (Juniors are exempt from the $5 fee). This fee does not result in points being awarded, nor any other of the benefits of membership.
