PDGA Competitive Divisions:
Frequently Asked Questions

When Should I Move Up To The Next Division?

Some players can't wait to move into a more challenging division. After all, most pros will tell you that your game will improve more quickly if you play against people with stronger skills than your own.

Is there anything keeping you from moving up? Short answer: no, unless the move would take you into a division that you are otherwise ineligible to compete in, such as a 35-year-old who wants to move into the Masters division.

Generally, when people talk about moving up, it is either to a higher Amateur division, or from Ams to Pro.

Here's a simple, unofficial formula to determine when to move up:

  • One win in Am III
  • Two wins in Am II
  • Three wins in Am I
By following this formula, very few players will ever accuse you of being a SANDBAGGER, a term used to describe players who compete in a division below their skill level. To be accused of sandbagging is to be called one of the lowest forms of disc golfer, akin to folks who litter or vandalize the course.

It's easy to avoid the stigma of sandbagging by simply moving up when the time comes. If you're still not sure if your time has come, chances are your fellow golfers will remind you!
