2000 USDGC, continued from here

"My sister, Deanna, and I hoped to lead the Junior's division of the WNDGC," said Ross. "When we arrived we were told that no other Junior girl had applied, and the rules required us both to play in the Women's Am Division. We had never played in a PDGA tournament before and never played against (adults) before, but everyone made us feel welcome."

13-year-old Nikki Ross

She would go on to beat two of the Pros, along with Mindy Tigchelaar, who finished 2nd last year in the Am division.

While having never played a PDGA event before, Nikki Ross has spent plenty of time around frisbees. A few stats:

  • Current World Junior Freestyle Champion
  • Three time Freestyle Players Association Junior Girl World Champion
  • The youngest player to ever qualify for Junior Worlds, when she was eight.
  • Many other frisbee-related World titles
Michigan's Mindy Tigchelaar Nikki's Dad, Rick Ross, may be more familar in disc golf households, being a former guts and ultimate player who has played in many Disc Golf World Championships. He even married Nikki's Mom on hole two of a disc golf course. Brother Karl Ross is a Jr. World qualifier and has World Titles in MTA and Accuracy. And sister Deanna is, according to Nikki, "the best 10-year-old freestyler in the world and probably the best 10-year-old golfer in the world."

Kimberly Neuman Nikki even treated the USDGC crowd to some sweet moves by sharing an impromptu freestyle duet with one of her heros, Ken Climo.

Okay then... Juliana, are you listening? Here comes Nikki, and no doubt her younger sister Deanna will also be gunning for you soon. We're guessing it won't be long, either.

Our congratulations to all the players and organizers of the 2000 USDGC and WNDGC. It was another fabulous experience for us all.
