PDGA Summit 2000, conclusion

Lizard Games With all the endless hours of discussion, there had to be some time to unwind. After dinner we found ourselves in the hotel’s courtyard, a pleasant place to retreat for some beers and more Lizard Games. These are the inventions of Mark “Lizard Lawyer” Ellis, the consummate gamemaster who loves to find new ways to bet on the flight of discs. Minis were zipping to the strangest places in that courtyard while only our laughter drowned out the contrasting classical french horns that the hotel was piping in through a hidden stereo system. As usual, the other players cleaned me out pretty good. Now I gotta practice mini games too, at least if I want to compete with these guys.

Brian Sullivan The agenda finally got around to marketing on Friday, and true to my election platform, I pushed strongly for the inclusion of a long term goal that works toward getting disc golf courses planted and increasing the number of worldwide players. The strategy is to build awareness of disc golf by targeting collegiate recreation and parks departments. If we build it, they will come. Then, when there are more disc golfers, the PDGA will have access to more resources, allowing it to broaden it’s marketing reach and impact on growth of the game.

The Board’s reactions to my proposals were positive, and the PDGA has now made a first step commitment to this long term goal. The process has begun in earnest. We are moving forward.

Stafford Lake DGC Many other ideas and agendas were presented during the 2000 summit, and I hesitate to share any specifics with you here and now. Why? The PDGA is being lead by a group of extremely dedicated, passionate and talented people. However, they are all volunteers, and volunteerism always takes a backseat to priorities like family and paying jobs. So, while certain goals were set, it’s premature to suggest what might and might not be achieved. Let’s just say that a fabulous group of disc golfers are doing everything in their power to make sure this game’s future is bright and healthy, and doing a damn good job at it. When you meet a PDGA Board member, past or present, be sure to say thanks for their efforts, ‘cuz they’re doing everything they can. Play on brothers and sisters, the PDGA is happening and lookin’ good.
