The Real Life Of The PDGA Board

Have you ever wondered exactly how the PDGA operates? Who’s there, what are they doing, and why do they do some things that drive us crazy?

Now that I’m one of those guys -- a recently elected member of the PDGA Board of Directors -- you can start blaming me too when there’s a policy that annoys you. While I may be on the inside, I’m new enough to still see things from the perspective of an outsider, and of course you’re invited along to share in any discoveries I might make.

Commissioner Jim Challas The Board formally convenes each spring for an annual summit meeting, where the latest issues affecting disc golf are discussed, debated, hammered out, and amidst all the general melee, things do get done. While I had already participated in a couple of monthly teleconferences, there’s a whole different dynamic present when you’re able to work close enough to physically slug it out over tough controversial subjects.

If you’re new to PDGA membership, here’s a brief summary of how it works: The Professional Disc Golf Association is a non-profit, member-run organization which governs the sport of disc golf. Board members are elected by the players and serve two-year terms. The PDGA employs only one full time staff member -- our highly effective and visionary Administrator Brian Hoeniger -- and several part timers, but mostly relies on volunteers to get all the work done. Together these folks keep the machine humming.
