Ask Stokely When To Play Tournaments, and Disc Weights

Dear Scott,

I've been playing disc golf for about a year and a half. I've never been in a tournement before and would like to to start, but don't know if I've reached the point in my game were I should. Should I be around par at a hard coarse before I enter into a tourny at that course? Are there other things I should be taking into consideration, or should I just jump in and see what happens?

Paul,

Just jump in! There are divisions for all levels at most events.

The one thing you should do first however is go to a couple of local league events to learn the basics of etiquette. Your first goals at the event should be to have fun, meet people, and learn the rules of tournament play. Don't be discouraged if someone in your group tries to teach rules or etiquette during the round, they are just trying to help.

Dear Scott,

I've been throwing the new Z Xpress and have been throwing it really well. What will the difference be if I move up or down in weight?

Brad Alexander

Brad,

Lighter discs tend to fly farther but are less stable. Heavier discs cut the wind better and tend to be easier to control for most (but not all) players. There is no one right answer here. You'll have to experiment to see which works best with your game.
