Ask Stokely Keeing The Nose Down, and More On Grips

Dear Scott,

Need some advice about basic backhand: How do I keep the nose down? I played lid golf on and off since the 70's, then picked up some new plastic (and a renewed interest) a little over a year ago. Have re-tooled my form, but have a major problem with keeping the nose down, especially when going for max distance. I'm throwing barely over 300 feet on a good day, when all works well, but feel that I need to get the nose down consistently before I can tweak and improve the rest. I can turn-over XL's and XS's, so I know I'm getting some snap. What do you think?

John,

There are three steps to keeping the nose down on a disc:

  1. Grip the disc with your thumb generally as far forward, or close to the rim, as you can while still allowing yourself to grip the disc well.
  2. When throwing the disc you want to pull it in a straight line.
  3. Have your follow-through go slightly down from the line that you just pulled the disc with.
All three of these things done together and properly will result in the nose of the disc being only slightly down. It is a difficult adjustment to make, but worth the effort!

Dear Scott,

I have been playing disc golf for about 2 1/2 years. My question is this: When I drive, I only use my pointer and middle finger. I can drive on an average of 400 feet, but do you think i can get more distance with three fingers or a power grip?

Ryan,

You will for sure throw farther when you develop a grip the uses four fingers. It will be awkward at first, and you may play worse for a few days, but your timing will come back and you will throw farther. As far as the power grip, it is not necessary that you throw that grip, but rather find the four finger grip that works for you.
